2019 has just rung in a few days ago, so what does that mean? Goals, resolutions, reflections, etc... I’ve always been one to enjoy creating goals and meeting them, but sometimes I set the bar too high or don’t remain committed because I’m not passionate about it. I’m sure this can go for majority of people, who let’s be honest, probably can’t remember their 2017 or 2018 resolutions. Business Insider proves this as they say “80% of resolutions fail by February!” However, I always have a belief in my followers and in my tips to avoid stats such as those. This post will provide you with tips to keep your goals and resolutions strong through the end of December 2019! Read below to see what I have researched and what I do to keep my resolutions going strong all year long.
1.) Write it Down You’d be surprised how many people choose a resolution and never write it anywhere! I suggest putting it in your reminders app as a weekly reminder, setting in your notes app on your phone, or putting it on a sticky note on your mirror. The idea is to always have it somewhere you will see it. 2.) Do A Monthly Evaluation To keep yourself on track, you want to look at your progress AT LEAST monthly. Reevaluate if your goals need to be slightly edited or praise yourself for doing a great job.
SSMAART Acronym
•S=Sustainable Is this a goal or resolution that you will carry on through the whole year? Will you continue to be passionate about it 11 months from now? Avoid simple goals that can be ended within a month. While those are still good, they are not the best for a year long resolution because it leaves the back half of your year empty.
•S=Specific Don’t have goals that allow for wiggle room and easy drop offs such as workout more, eat healthier, or relax better. Instead, change it to something like workout 2 times a week, eat 1500 calories a day, or practice relaxation through deep breathing daily.
•M=Measurable How do you know you’re achieving and succeeding if you can’t measure it? Whether it be workout out 2 times a week, memorize 1 bible verse a week, or eat 20 g of sugar a day, it needs to be something that isn’t to vague to keep track of. Calendars and check lists serve as a good way to keep up on your measuring.
•A=Attainable Don’t discourage yourself by choosing an impossible goal. I often shoot for the stars, but if you can never complete it, you will never be pleased with yourself or want set goals again. But also keep in mind not to make it too attainable; you should be decently challenged!
•A=Action Oriented Your goals need to have a reason and a passion behind them in order for you to want to act on them. Don’t choose something empty or shallow but also don’t choose something that has no action attached like “be happier.” How will you be happier? Choose an action. Is being happier something that passions you? Make sure it is!!
•R=Realistic This goes hand in hand with attainable: choose a resolution that isn’t ridiculous or is something you actually have the time or money for. For example, if you chose to travel the world as a goal, you must be realistic in having the money and time to do so.
•T=Time Choose a time constraint on your goals. Instead of losing 24 pounds in a year, choose to make it 2 pounds a month. If you say something like “by the end of the year,” it is likely that you will crunch your goals into the last 2 months of the year instead of spreading it out.
A couple more things: Reward yourself too! When you meet goals you should always celebrate. Also, change your resolution or goals a few weeks in if they don’t work out. It’s better to edit them a few weeks in than drop it in a couple months. Lastly, use a support system! There is no better way to conquer goals when you have other supporting you and holding you accountable for them.
I hope these tips help, and I hope your 2019 is a year full of personal growth & goodness for you! Let me know if you want help creating a resolution or goal for you.
