Skin is the first impression and often a big insecurity of many people. We all desire glowy, acne free, even pigmented skin, especially in the summer. Luckily, I have finally perfected my skin care routine to achieve those things, and I will share it with you! My skin can go from very pimply, to super dry, to really oily; it just depends on the week. Due to that, I have tips for all kinds of skin, no matter your age or gender. Also, I have a ton of products listed that you can use in order to help you achieve your desired look. Below I have split my tips for the summer (or any time of year really) into each kind of skin type. I apologize for the length but skin care is TOTALLY worth all the detail!
Oily Skin
Oily skin is unpredictable and inconvenient. It can be caused by stress, humidity, over washing, sweat, oil based sunscreen, and sometimes a poor diet. Be careful not to over wash. Also, you should always use a moisturizer and drink a lot of water. The products I have listed below are some of my all time favs and have simple ingredients that will not make your skin too greasy.
If I had to pick favorites, the oil absorbing sheets and oil free moisturizer are winners! I love oil absorbing sheets and take them everywhere. It takes the oil right off your skin, makeup on or not, and leaves it perfectly matte after without messing anything up. The oil free moisturizer can be used by anyone. I love using it in the morning and before my primer when doing makeup because it doesn't make my skin oily or cakey.
Sample Skin Care Routine
Morning: Wash face with foaming cleanser and cold water. Dry off and apply a little oil free moisturizer. If heading outside, mix with SPF 15 light moisturizer.
Afternoon: Blot excess oil with oil absorbing sheets. If working out or sweating during your day, use Clear Proof Toner or a refreshing mist after.
Evening: Wash face with foaming cleanser or deep cleanser option with warm water. Apply toner if needed. If desired, weekly you can use a face mask, preferred an exfoliating one. Use oil free moisturizer or thicker option for bed time.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is highly frustrating and can be caused by harsh environment, products, hormones, lack of sleep, and dehydration. Products used on it have to be clean and unscented. Just like all skin types, do not over wash, get enough sleep, and drink tons of water! Avoid exfoliating constantly or trying new products. My skin has always been very picky, so through trial and error I have found awesome products that do not irritate it or cause acne. Any of the products listed in each section are great for sensitivity as well!
Each of these can work on any skin type but they are suited for sensitive skin by their ingredients. I love each of these equally, but I use the moisturizer by Simple the most. It is a product I swear by, and it can work on anything since it has a lightweight nature! Also, anything by Beauty Counter is a great selection in general because the ingredients in their products are pure and high quality.
Sample Skin Care Routine:
Morning: Rinse face with cold water. Spritz on rose mist. Apply lotion or sunscreen if needed.
Afternoon: Refresh with Rose mist or a splash of water.
Evening: Gently wash with dove soap bar and warm water, dab dry with towel. Apply moisturizer lightly.
Acne Prone Skin
Acne prone skin is a common trait of most teenagers. It can be rooted from genetics, diet, stress, hormones, excess oil, over drying, or lack of sleep like other skin problems. I recommend seeing a dermatologist to help with your acne so they possibly put you on a helpful pill such as Accutane. Seeing a dermatologist really helped me and has been a big factor in eliminating my acne! The other factor of achieving clear skin was how I took care of my skin (obviously). I provided a many useful products below, but it is important you sleep well and hydrate in the process of getting rid of acne too.
Charcoal Mask by Mary Kay ($24.00) !!
I also recommend using the sunscreens, moisturizers, and cleansers from other sections too. It is a trial and error process to see what works best for your skin! Whether it be salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide or exfoliating, you will find what will conquer your acne. My favorites are the benzoyl peroxide creamy wash and the charcoal mask by Mary Kay. Both shrunk my pores and provided clearing and satisfying results! Just be sure to use a beauty counter or simple moisturizer after since they are drying. Lastly and mostly, remember persistence and patience is key to achieving clear skin!
Sample Skin Care Routine
Morning: Wash face with mild cleanser such as Pink Grapefruit facial cleanser with cold water. Lotion, if needed, should be an oil free option. Apply spot treatment on pimples. Avoid wearing heavy makeup to prevent irritation and clogged pores.
Afternoon: Blot away access oil. If needed, use a toner or a splash of water. Avoid touching your face and only pop pimples that have a white head at the surface.
Evening: Rinse off face with water/remove makeup as soon as possible. Apply face mask every other day or each week. Wash with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid face wash and warm water after removing mask. Then, apply moisturizer such as Replenishing Rich Moisturizer by Simple and apply spot treatment where needed. On severe pimples, use a small square or circular band aid and a dollop of spot treatment to seal pimple(s) overnight.
Dry Skin
Dry skin can be one of the most annoying skin types because you almost never have a smooth surface to work with. It can happen when your environment has low humidity or is super sunny, if you use drying skin products, if you don't moisturize enough, or if you spend time in a chlorinated pool. Some tips I have found that help my dry skin is to have a humidifier in my room running at night and to use gentle moisture wash with hyaluronic acid. Also, instead of rubbing your face dry, rubbing in lotion, and rubbing your face wash on, pat pat PAT! This will prevent exfoliation and irritation to already dry skin. Below are great options for dry skin and can be layered easily if need be.
Vaseline or Aquaphor
Raw Coconut Oil (solid or liquid state)
The Hydrating Facial Cleanser by CeraVe is a miracle worker. It saved my skin in the winter within 3 days and is a great option for a moisturizing "face mask" if left on longer. I also love the hydrating gel cream because it is the perfect consistency and can easily be made thicker with coconut oil. The regimen provided below brought me back to great skin in 3 days, but if you need it for a long time to keep dryness away, you could have an underlying skin condition or infection and should see a dermatologist.
Sample Skin Care Routine
Morning: With slightly warm or cold water, gently wet face and cleanse with one face wash above. Pat dry and pat apply hydrating gel cream or lighter lotion option. If needed, mix a dabble of coconut oil into lotion. Gently put a miniscule amount of aquaphor, vaseline, or coconut oil over tiny, very dry areas as needed too.
Afternoon: Dab extra oil off with oil blotters and avoid using more lotion except on very dry, small areas. Use Glow Getter mist if needed.
Evening: With warm water, wash face gently with Hydrating Facial Cleanser and be sure to leave the cleanser on for at least 15 seconds to let it soak in. It can be left on longer for a "face mask" too. Pat dry and mix a little coconut oil and gel cream together to pat or gently rub on. Pat apply aquaphor/vaseline in tiny, very dry areas. Seal, if needed, with Glow Getter Mist.
Dull/Uneven Skin
Dull and uneven skin can come along with any skin type, as it is not just one it itself (ex. you have dull skin and acne or you have uneven skin and dryness). Because of that, there is not an exact regimen, but I do have a few awesome products that can help. As far as tips, know that getting some sun but not to much, drinking water, exfoliation, drinking herbal teas for skin (green tea or chamomile), and eating healthy can all help too.
Products with Vitamin C or glitter/shimmer
Vitamin D aka SUN (but always with plenty of sunscreen though)
Use cold water especially in mornings to wake up skin
Both masks listed above provide GREAT results and feel amazing after rinsed off and washed away. I love them and use either of them once a week to keep my skin healthy, glowing, and bright. Just an FYI, with the peel mask, use a pretty thick layer so it is easier to peel off later, and avoid placing it close to your hairline and eyes/eyebrows.
Normal Skin
Normal skin people can be blessed or cursed. They might have trouble finding products for their skin because all products are either for oily or dry skin, or they could be totally blessed and are able to use any products. Normal skin people, regardless, you are lucky, but you could also just be doing everything right for your skin. So either keep it up, or start hydrating and getting a good natural skin and sleep regimen to keep your skin awesome. I have already shared great products above for normal skin, but I will write them below without the links. See earlier in this post for links and prices to them if needed. Lastly, because your skin is basically perfect already, you can keep it that way by using simple, natural, and lightweight products.
Replenishing Rich Moisturizer by Simple !!

Oil Free Face Lotion by Mary Kay !!
Charcoal Mask by Mary Kay !!
Just to Clarify Jelly Face Mask by Lush !!
Rose Water Mist by Beauty Counter **
Coconut Oil
You can follow a regimen or routine similar to the sensitive skin section, which is also listed above.
Aging (or shall I say just WISE and EXPERIENCED) Skin
While I am not an authority over aging skin yet, I have done some research. Beauty Counter, Lancome, and Mary Kay all carry great products and lines for aging skin or for preventing aging skin. Some of the biggest pieces that will help keep your skin youthful and healthy are to get GOOD sleep, drink water, deep moisturize at night, use natural and simple skin products, and always USE SUNSCREEN. Also, exfoliation, products with Vitamin C or D, facial oils, and retinoids can all be extremely helpful with aging skin.
